Auroville: Sadhana Forest

Giulia and I lived and worked in this community for two weeks. aviramIt is a remarkable reforestation project that is restoring a tropical, dry evergreen forest on 70 acres of denuded land in south India. The project also has branches in Kenya and Haiti, where they are working to grow fruit forests and help establish a self sufficient, ecologically sustainable communities.

You can read more about our experiences here.

Another amazing project in central India that originally began 60 years ago as a leprosy community, but has expanded to welcome all those who are marginalized and outcast. A key aspect of Anandwan is work, and the people who live there are engaged in various industries that allow them to live and work with dignity. Giulia and I spent one month there, and you can read about these experiences here and here.

Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery

This nunnery was started by Tenzin Palmo, one of the first westerners to be ordained as a Tibetan nun. Palmo spent 12 years in a solitary retreat in a Himalayan cave, and since exiting, has worked to establish this nunnery. For centuries, Tibetan nuns have been marginalized and underfunded, and this center is working to re-establish a tradition of female monasticism that was nearly wiped out.
